Dr. Bahaa El-Din Makawi participated in the tenth edition of the Annual Conference on Democracy and Democratic Transition Issues, organized by the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies in Doha, Qatar, where he presented a paper entitled “ The Juba Peace Agreement for Sudan: Challenges of the Current Reality and Future ProspectsIn his paper, he explained that although the armed movements emerged under different circumstances, they share many common demands, including balanced development, participation in power, recognition of cultural diversity, and respect for human rights and citizenship. These same demands also shaped the positions of the opposition parties during the negotiations that led to the Juba Peace Agreement for Sudan. Despite the political, economic, and security challenges facing the agreement, prospects for its success remain if the parties are committed to moving forward with the implementation of its provisions, maintaining the broad popular support it has gained, and benefiting from the international backing it has received. Dr. Makawi emphasized that sustainable peace requires all parties to the peace process to remain fully aware of the dangers of sliding back into war. He also stressed the need for the signatory movements to take into account the critical economic and political conditions currently facing the country.
